An Update on the Life of Gail Turner

Following highschool I attended HLG at Hannibal and the University of Missouri at Columbia, and then returned home to work with an older brother running bulldozers for a few years until having the opportunity to work for the Bank of Purdin when it was expanding to Brookfield in 1981, and now it is 29 years later still with the same employer. I lived with my parents north of Linneus until moving into a place of my own in 1995 on the north end of Brookfield. Two years later I met Tina and now we are busy facilitating an active life for our two teenage daughters, Katie and Abigail. My extracurricular associations include the Masonic Lodge, Rotary, the local hospital board, a Disciples of Christ (Christian) Church, the YMCA, and a Planning and Zoing Committee for the City of Brookfield.

Happenings in the Life of Sarita Bagley Coffman

I started the 1st grade at Browning and then we came back to the Purdin School for grades 2-5.
Mrs. Bunch was our 1st grade teacher, Ms. Hall, 2nd,  Mrs.Gooch, 3rd, Mrs. Cox was 4th and Ms Yagel taught our 5th grade class.  We then returned to Browning for the 6- 12 grades.  Shelby and Browning and Purdin consolided in our 7th grade class and then Linneus consolidated soon after...can't remember,  was that in the 8th grade?
Do you remember all the elections attempting to build a  new school  on the ballot but no one could agree where the new school  would be located?
Sarita Bagley  and members of class coming home from field trip to Jeff City.

I moved at the end of our Freshman year to Moline,Illinois.  I was so over whelmed with the big city and leaving our small farm, my friends, and community.  This was a turbulent time too.  Martin Luther King was killed and riots happened right around me.  I was ridiculed for my slight southern language and being a country girl.  They didn't even have a basketball team...we played basketball for 6 weeks in PE and I was the first pick when we were siding up!
Dad moved us back home before my Junior year but things were not the same, my friends had lived without me for a year, we were driving and dating, my dad was not feeling well, mom sick and having nerve problems and money was very tight.  Mother couldn't drive but she needed to go to the doctor so she kept me home to take her.  Many mornings I got up at 4 or 5am to drive Dad to Browning to get in his truck and then came home to take Mom to Brookfield to the doctor and then back to Browning at 6 or 7 pm to pick up Dad.  I guess my parents did what they had to do but it was rough to take the static from the school teachers.
It also made it rough to fit in with the other students and feel a part of my class.
Danny and I met in the summer of 1969 and married in May 1970.  I did not go on the Senior trip, my parents couldn't afford it and I think I was just ready to move on with my life.
Our first daughter Amy Annedied at 12 days a staph infection that she had gotten from the hospital she was born.
The following year, we had Ryan in 1972, then Ang in 1973 and Lisa in 1977.
Ryan lives in Trenton, Ang in Michigan, and Lisa in Nebraska.
Ryan and Mandy have Wyatt, 15 yo, and lives in Trenton
Ang married Wayne last year and lives in Michigan.
Lisa and Ken live in Nebraska and have Lexi, 11 yo and then Brandon 8 months old.
My Dad died the month after Lisa was born.
I went to college in Business first and was the office manager for an equipment company then took classes to be an EMT and then went back to school for 3 more years to become an R.N.  I worked at Chillicothe until we moved to the farm.  I worked for the Dept of Mental Health until I took the job as school nurse at ....LINN CO R-1.  I love it!  I love the kids and the people that I work with.
I raise sheep and cows, have a small fiber business that you can read about on my blog at  http://coffmanspinningcfarm.blogspot.com/

There is so many of our class mates that I lost track of and have not seen since we graduated, hope I learn what happened to them at the reunion.

Happenings of Debbie Almond

Hi Sarita:

Noticed you wanted to know a little about us. Well....I still have Purdin as my hometown after all these years. Haven't ventured too far from the home place. Steve and I have been married 39 years and have two daughters. Becky who is 33, lives in Pittsburg PA with her husband Curtis Stratman and is the mother to Isabella who is 20 months old and expecting a second child in December. Becky is a RN but is able to be a stay-at-home mom. Marcia who is 28, lives in Marceline, MO with her husband Josh Edgar, she has a step-daughter Hillary who is 5 and is expecting a baby in September. Marcia is a teacher at Marceline Elementary School. I have worked with Bank of Brookfield-Purdin for the past 22 years and Steve works for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

Look forward to seeing everyone Saturday evening.

The Happenings of Pat McMillin

I am sorry for the delay, but I am traveling right now, but did want to send something in case you have any media or print material. Attached is a recent photo of my wife, Freda, and I.

The period 1970-1980, We lived our lives in Browning, trying to carve out a living by various means. I worked at Browning Lumber Yard, playing drums at Honky Tonks for 10 more years (best paying job so far in that period), Construction jobs, Odd jobs, Elected Browning Mayor at 23 years old (lots of fun and challenges), Substitute Rural Mail Carrier, Dog Trainer (?), Drug/Liquor Store Owner, Real Estate Salesperson (selling farms of which I had no clue on farming). How Freda maintained her sanity and patience is beyond me... But all these Missouri experiences laid a strong foundation for us to survive in any circumstance, and gave us and the children a ethics and integrity for our upcoming move to California. We still maintain those Missouri principles.

From 1981 to now, I won't bore you folks with what we've done, other than to say it's been good. My career can be seen at www.mcmillinventures.com .

On a personal side,

Well how do I start?. I think with information that's most important.
We have grown children, Vanessa, Patrick and Sandra, all born in Missouri. We moved to San Diego, California in 1981 to allow for better opportunities for my children and us. Business in Missouri was not good in 1981. It has been a good move for us. The children are all through college, with degrees and positions they enjoy. They all have homes within 5 miles of our home, and all have 2 children each. All are very close to us, especially Freda.

Freda and I will celebrate our 40th next year. I was fortunate to have married into the well established and stable Head family. As many of you may not know, my father was married 6 times, as was my mother, so I experienced all the divorces and rocky roads at a young age before I got to Linn County in 1967, so I think that background, along with my wife's stable conservative family upbringing, we have been blessed with our life.

We live in a beautiful home for over 25 years, and in the past few years, we bought a mountain cabin just 45 minutes from our home that has 4 seasons, and is at 6,000 foot elevation. It gives us the snow, spring, summer and fall, which we miss (San Diego is always 70 degrees and boring).

Pat and Freda's Cabin

I have fond memories of all of you, and of Linn County R-1. I do wish to apologize for leaving in mid-year during our Senior Year, especially as your Class President, but the circumstances was beyond my control, and it was best. The basis for that situation is long in the past. I obtained my Linn County Diploma that same year after completing 1 last class through MU Extension.

We travel to see family there 1 or 2 times a year. We always drive through Browning. My brother Mike, and I are very close and speak or email weekly. My kids are true blue Missourians and they enjoy coming also.
Best wishes, and I hope you all enjoy the reunion that I will unfortunately miss.
Regards,
Pat McMillin

One of my favorite stories:
Sophomore year, 1967/68. New teacher, Mr. Butler. History teacher, but also the new Basketball coach. He spent most of the time talking basketball, not history. We were in that last small school room building. He stated that he could touch the ceiling, and of course we all challenged him. We cleared out the chairs forming a path, except for his desk and trash can at the end. . He ran across the room leaping, and came down in the trash can. If I recall, his feet or foot was wedged in the can, and he fell over because his feet were stuck. We all laugh loudly, and he jumped up mad because we laughed at him.

Have fun..

I found this picture of Freda in my old trunk.  I noticed when Pat sent their picture that Freda still looks as young as ever...thats just not right!

The Linn Co. R-1 Class of 1970 40th Class Reunion

Where are some of our old classmates? What has happened in their lifes? Some I have not seen since we graduated. I know some will not come to the reunion but I sure would love to see them all.

We will sadly miss our old friends and classmates that are deceased:
Charles Miller, Larry Maggart, Mike Crist, and Anita Harris

I plan to add some more pictures that I have saved of our classmates as I get them scanned.

If you were in our class and you read this, will you leave a comment and tell me about yourself since we graduated.

Where did life take you?  Do you have a family?  What are you interested in?   Do you have some memories of the old school days that you would like to share?

Please leave me a comment or email me at rocnbarc@cvalley.net

Hope I see you Saturday night at 6:30 PM at the Purdin Community Building...please dress casual and come relaxed ready to visit.  One of our classmates, Carol Smith has built quite a repetation for her wonderful cooking and catering and will be catering the meal.
